Deepak Majumdar was one of the founder members of Krittibas magazine. In fact it was he, and not Sunil Gangopadhyay, who had an idea of starting an avant garde poetry magazine in order to depart from the then prevailing Bengali poetry. However, when Sunil Gangopadhyay took full control of the magazine, Deepak became disgusted and left Krittibas. The other founder, viz Ananda Bagchi, also departed.
When the Hungryalists were arrested and prosecuted in September 1964, Deepak Majumdar drafted a protest letter addressed to West Bengal government, to be signed by writers of the day. None of the Bengali writers came forward. Some even started denigrating him for such a step.
